Entwined is a simple but striking design for a small (5”/13 cm) square motif. This pattern was designed for a special purpose. Small squares such as this are sometimes given to new mothers and their preemie babies and swapped between them at regular intervals, allowing them to bond via scent when touch is not possible. I recently learned about bonding squares and was struck by the simple but powerful way that they can help families during a trying time.

I wanted to design a motif that would reflect the beauty of the concept, and so Entwined was born. Each side of the square features a simple but intriguing twining pair of post stitches accentuated by a bobble. These squares are quick to work up and quite versatile - beyond serving as bonding squares, they would be lovely worked at a slightly looser gauge for afghans, ear warmers, bags, or even coasters. Try working them with thread or fingering weight yarn for a delicate effect, or bulky weight to crank out a blanket!

Level: Intermediate. This pattern uses crossed fpdc and fpdc2tog as well as bobbles and working in the round.
