Eureka Valley Shawl is one of eight designs in The Sun and Fog Collection, a collaboration of knit and crochet patterns by Bay Area designers and dyers celebrating community and togetherness from the foggy shores to the sunny valleys of Northern California. It’s been an honor to be part of this collaboration with so many amazing designers and dyers.

Eureka Valley Shawl is an asymmetric triangular shawl worked in stockinette and lace. Slipped stitches in the stockinette section show off a variety of yarns beautifully especially multi-colored yarns. The lace provides visual texture with eyelets, garter and beads worked within the diamond stitch pattern.

I had the honor of designing this shawl with Speckled Finch Studios’ Cushy Merino, a luscious 100% merino yarn. Nina, the dyer behind Speckled Finch Studios, and I met when I designed for I Knit San Francisco, and she provided yarn support for another design in the book. Nina’s color palette is gorgeous, and I have been looking forward to an opportunity to collaborate with her.

I grew up in San Francisco’s Eureka Valley, just east of Twin Peaks where the famous fog stops when it comes rolling in from the Pacific Ocean. From our front window, I could see the fog sitting on the peaks and the sun shining in downtown San Francisco. It’s been many years since I lived in San Francisco but being part of this collection has brought me back to the sun and fog.

Swatch yarn and extra yarn are included in the yarn requirement.

The put-up of the yarns used in the sample is larger than most average skeins of fingering weight yarn. If your yardage is less, this shawl can still be worked with one skein each of two different colors, and you’ll still have a nice size shawl. Instructions are included on how to make the adjustments.

See bottom photo for shawl schematic.
