Like the All those Shades socks, this design is made for leftover fingering weight yarn. Don’t we all have it? We need two skeins of yarn for a pair of socks, but we don’t use it all, and what to do with the remains?

Well, here’s one option!
Both the hat and the mittens will eat away at those leftovers and make something useful too.

You can use solids, semi-solids, self-striping, there’s no limits. I’ve used as small remains as 5-6g in my version.

This is an easy going colorwork project with no more than 3 sts gaps, so a good beginner project.

You will need 135-145 yards for the mittens and 230-240 yards for the hat.

There will be some loose ends so I will recommend starting sewing them in while you knit, that will make it a bit easier when you’re finished.

If you want the hat tighter at the bottom, you can also use 2mm needles for the ribbing.

You will need 2.5mm small circular needles and dpn-s: when the amount of stitches for the hat doesn’t fit comfortably on the circular needles anymore, and of course for the mittens. You will also need a st holder or some leftover yarn for the thumb stitches.
