I have been fascinated with this pattern for over 30 years but found it a cantankerous one to make behave. After finally managing to chart it out and then a whole lot of test knitting, I’ve gotten it to behave and play nice in a pair of lacy fingerless gloves. Along the way I added some tweaks to this classic pattern so that it flows from one motif to the next. I’ve developed two lengths and two sizes for lots of choices.

The gloves feature 4 pattern motifs appearing around the circumference of the glove. The pattern continues on both the palm and the back of the hand with the thumb gusset inserted into the pattern symmetrically by splitting a motif. This pattern is given as a chart only. The shorter version of the gloves completes 3 full pattern repeats and is about 6.5 “ long. The longer version of the gloves completes 4 full pattern repeats and is about 10 “ long.

Different sizes are accomplished by changing needle size/gauge, NOT by altering repeat or stitch numbers. Thus, there is only one set of instructions given that applies to both sizes. This pattern is sized generously; if in doubt, size down. Note that I have used DPNs to make both pictured pairs; I have attempted to generalize my instructions for other needle set-ups but cannot guarantee that they will work with this pattern. Regardless, you will still need DPNs for the thumb. This pattern is suitable advanced intermediate or expert knitters who are comfortable reading a charted pattern.

Yarn recommendations: solid or only lightly tonal yarns. Yarn with medium to heavy color variegations, speckles or self-striping sequences will compete with the pattern. Lighter colors will demonstrate the pattern best.
