Choose three colors of DK weight yarn and fade them together for this simple ribbed dog sweater. The sweater is very easy to knit with 1x1 ribbing. Choose between nine sizes ranging from petite pups to big breeds. There are notes throughout the pattern to help you customize the size of the sweater to perfectly fit your pooch. Short rows on the body make the back of the sweater longer, so the fabric is shorter along the belly of your dog. The ribbed fabric is very stretchy, which makes it comfortable to wear and the same stretchy fabric can fit your dog even if they grow a little bit after eating lots of snacks. Enjoy knitting this cozy sweater for your canine companion!

Sizes
1 (2, 3, 4, 5) (6, 7, 8, 9)

Size 3 shown on the white French Bulldog dog named Stitch with an actual Girth (chest) circumference of 18′′ / 46cm. Size 4 shown on the black French Bulldog named Brioche with an actual Girth (chest) circumference of 22′′ / 56cm.

Finished Measurements
12 (16, 18, 22, 26) (30, 34, 38, 42)′′ / 30 (41, 46, 56, 66) (76, 86, 97, 107)cm Girth (chest) circumference. The Girth (chest) is measured around the part of their chest after their legs. Measurements taken after blocking.

The length is customizable. Refer to the schematic illustrations for the other measurements. The pattern includes notes where you can customize the sizes of the sweater to fit your pup. The smaller sizes are designed for petite pups like Chihuahuas, Shih Tzus, and little Terriers and the sizes increase to fit breeds ranging from French Bulldogs and Dachsunds to Boxers, Labradors, and Great Danes. If your dog’s Girth/chest circumference measures more than 44′′ / 1cm, then this pattern is easy to customize by adding more increase rounds for a larger size. You can also adjust your needle size to get a smaller or larger size.

I recommend selecting a size that is approximately 1′′ / 2.5cm or 2′′ / 5cm larger than your dog’s actual chest circumference for a fit with a little bit of extra wiggle room or select the size that matches your dog’s exact chest circumference for a fitted sweater. If you plan to wear the sweater on top of a harness most of the time, then measure your dog while wearing the harness.

For the best measuring results, use as soft tape measure.

The 1x1 ribbing is very stretchy, so the overall circumference of the sweater can stretch up to 6′′ / 15cm more to fit your dog as it grows.

Yardage
Approximately 80 (160, 220, 250, 300) (410, 460, 520, 580)yds / 73 (146, 201, 229, 274) (375, 421, 475, 530) m total

If you are using 3 colors faded together, I recommend having an equal amount of all 3 colors to represent the total yardage requirement for your size. It’s always good to have a bit more than the total recommended yardage, so you have more flexibility when you fade your colors together. I used less than 1 skein of each color for my Size 3 and Size 4 sweaters.

Magic loop method is used for knitting in the round. Watch this Westknits video to assist with the Magic Loop method. https://youtu.be/hpFHbHmrCcc

Notions
3 stitch markers, tapestry needle, waste yarn

Gauge
18 sts & 28 rnds = 4′′ / 10cm in 1x1 ribbing after blocking. The fabric is measured stretched rather than relaxed. I gently stretched the fabric, not too extreme, just a bit to echo the stretched quality of the fabric when it’s worn on your dog.
