I recently released my Self Care Shawl pattern, and it was a huge success! So many of you loved it that I decided to create a faded fingering weight version as well. Please note that the shawl construction is exactly the same as the original Self Care Shawl, but this version also includes colorwork instructions for a faded effect. :)

My intention for this design is to be a relaxing, meditative project you’ll reach for to help you ground yourself when you are stressed. It’s perfect for even the newest of beginners, as you don’t even need to know how to purl! The repetitive motions of knitting garter stitch with a simple eyelet edging are sure to bring you peace if you let them.

The wearability of this piece is astounding, as it’s a large triangle shape that you can wrap around your neck like a scarf, tie in the front or on the side, or fasten loosely with a shawl pin. Its simplicity makes it easy to style with any outfit, and it looks equally amazing on all genders! You could opt to follow the pattern and make it a fade, or simply work it in a solid neutral color for a classic look. I chose to attach a tassel on each corner, but you could also add a fringe along the edge if you like, or just leave it plain. The possibilities are endless!

I used two different hand-dyed fingering weight yarns for this project: Tawa merino/silk from Pichinku Fibers in the colorway “Blush” and Diva Sock from Unicorn Yarn Co. in the sparkly colorway “Sunstone.” Both of these yarns are so stunningly unique, yet melt together beautifully to create the perfect fade. I highly recommend checking out both of these beautiful dyers! You can also purchase a limited edition kit for this design, including both of the yarns listed here, the pattern, and a unique “Skein Queen” crown pin. Only 5 will be available, so snag one while you can!

MATERIALS

Note: The cool thing about this pattern is that you can use whatever yarn and needle combo you like! Just make sure you have enough yardage to make the shawl long enough to wear (I’d say at least 2 skeins). The following materials list is for those who want to make a shawl exactly like mine.

  • Approximately 436 yards (399 m) of fingering weight (2) yarn for C1 -- I used Pichinku Tawa in “Blush” -- and 380 yards (348 m) of fingering weight (2) yarn for C2 -- I used Unicorn Yarn Co. Diva Sock in “Sunstone.”

  • US 6 (4 mm) knitting needles, or size needed to obain gauge. I do recommend using circular needles with a long cable, as these will be able to hold more stitches than straight needles.

  • Common notions, such as locking stitch markers, measuring tape, yarn needle, and scissors.

MEASUREMENTS

Approximately 91” long x 32” wide at its widest point, not including tassels.

GAUGE
21 st x 34 rows = 4” in garter stitch after wet blocking. Note that gauge is not overly important in this pattern, since size can vary.
