This is my fourth hat design pattern and has been developed over the last 6 months since living on Fair Isle, Shetland, during October and November in 2019.
Every morning, hurrying to get dressed before 6am, I felt the anticipation of sunrise arriving before it was visible. Through the act of getting up before anyone else had stirred in the house, and by trying to move around silently in the darkness to get dressed in the clothes laid out the night before, I left the house into sharp island winds and a deep darkness turning a shade of midnight blue that pressed into a city girl’s chest.
The inspiration for this hat is waiting, just waiting for the chink of light to arrive signalling the sunrise. Learning my true East very quickly, I could, at times, see the curvature of the earth, a fusion of wonder and anticipation when light started to arrive.
I have knitted this hat in Natural black and Natural white for black of night, with strips of sunrise in Burnt Ochre, Cocoa and Damask and Purple Haze; colours are from the rich Jamieson of Shetland palette. The flashes of colour stripes are little bits I had in my stash and you can also use any of yours for this flash of a hint of a warm sunrise.

SIZING
Instructions and chart for 1 size are given in Natural Black and Natural White colour way in Jamieson’s of Shetland.
The Jamieson’s yarn (pictured in Black/ white) is a loose fitted beanie, I used 3mm needles and it measures 8.5 inches / 22cm from the centre point of the crown to the bottom of the rib. And will fit a head of 22.5 - 24 inches in diameter. If you use 2.75mm needles, the size will come out smaller

Tension.
3mm needles = 32stitches and 32 rows in a 10cm square, 2.75mm needles 34 stitches and 34 rows to 10cm square

I used almost one full ball of Jamieson’s natural black and almost one full ball of natural white with small amounts of the 4 sunrise colours of Burnt Ochre, Cocoa, Damask, and Purple Haze.
there are 3 images of alternative colour choices where you can make this pattern more your own.
