I designed these mitts to pair with my popular Fairy Lights Advent Shawl. The incredible love for the shawl during our Dec 2025 CAL inspired this matching set. Use your leftover shawl minis or pick a totally new yarn—your choice!
To make the most of each colour I simply joined every new colour as the last one ran out, rather than changing colours at the end of a row. I used a thumb knot to join mid row but you can use whichever method you prefer! Please bare in mind that if you decide to change colours at the end of rows rather than mid row like I have, you may need more yarn that stated to complete the pattern. I refer to the mini skein colours as “main colour” throughout the pattern and the lighter yarn I have used as the “contrast yarn”.
The main section is worked as 4 rows of main colour, then one row of contrast yarn. This creates an effect where the contrast yarn looks like little strings of fairy lights against the bright main colour.
The main body section of the mitts is worked flat. It is then seamed using slip stitch (or sewn together if you prefer) leaving a thumb hole. You will then add a top and bottom cuff edge to the main body section to finish the mitts.
US crochet terms used.
Sizing
My mitts measure approx 21.5cm in length, 20cm in circumference (10cm wide when laid flat) when finished. Tension makes a big difference to sizing so you may need to adjust your crochet hook up or down to get the correct sizing (or follow the instructions for adjustments in pattern as appropriate).
