This pattern was inspired by fantasy and gaming culture and is a crocheted gear or cog designed to be a coaster but can also be adapted to be used for a Christmas ornament as well! For those that really obsess over mechanical engineering, steampunk, or dwarven aesthetics you will appreciate this pattern.

All you will need is to understand intermediate crochet construction terms, and manipulation of fabric or stitches based on hook insertion and placement. I also have a few images to explain some of the abbreviated terms below if you’re unfamiliar with blo or flo.

For those that work in tighter tensions I recommend having a main hook that you choose plus a size up. This is because if you work in a really tight tension you will have cupping and you don’t want that happening with this pattern. Going a size up in a hook at certain points helps us build our texture rounds without having a cupping issue.

Gauge mostly depends on your personal tension, yarn weight and brand, and hook size. But Gage isn’t too important.*

Red Heart Yarn no fancy invisible slip stitch.
5mm Main Hook + Worsted Weight = 3 ⅞” diameter without teeth. 4 ⅞” with tooth to tooth measurement.
Yarn Bee Soft and Sleek with invisible slip stitch.
5.5mm Main Hook + Worsted Weight = 4” diameter without teeth. 5 ⅛” with tooth to tooth measurement.

Ch = chain
St or sts = Stitch or Stitches
Sl st = slip stitch
Sc = single crochet
Hdc = half double crochet
Dc = double crochet
Flo = front loop only
Blo = back loop only
Picot = picot stitch
