Even if you aren’t a half-blood prince, Potions lessons come in handy. Where else will you learn to bottle fame, brew glory, and stopper death? You’ll need your copy of“Advanced Potion Making” by Libatius Borage. Got your cauldron ready? We are about to brew some liquid luck!

Felix Felicis is the sixth pattern in The Hogwarts Library Collection, and brings to mind a bubbly potion simmering away in a cauldron, with a bit of magic sparkle and “foam” added in.
The knit-and-purl pattern sequence in this shawlette looks like ripples on a liquid surface, but no worries, it is definitely more straightforward to knit than it is to make the actual Felix Felicis potion. The piece is finished with a fun frothy-sparkly border and looks great from both sides! And if you’d like a larger shawl: you can keep brewing, err knitting, if you have extra yarn.

If you are interested in rather more illicit potions, like the ones from “Moste Potente Potions” for example, you could brew yourself some Amortensia with pink yarn and some creamy mohair as contrast, or you could go for some Polyjuice potion with greenish yarn and bouclé instead!

About the pattern:
Felix felicis is a pattern suitable for advanced beginners who want to experiment with mohair or novelty yarns. The piece is a reversible semicircular shawlette or shawl (the size is fully adjustable); it is worked in a straightforward knit-purl sequence pattern from the center out, and ends with a frothy picot border worked only with the contrast yarn.

Materials:
360 yds of Sport weight yarn (MC)
200 yds of Lace weight contrast yarn, such as sparkly or sequined novelty yarns, or mohair (CC)

Used for the sample:
1 skein of Madelinetosh Pashmina (about 110g / 360 yds) in color Liquid Gold (MC), 1 ball of Trendsetter Luna (25g / 350 yds) in color Gold (CC)

Size 3mm / US 2.5, 32” or longer circular needle
Stitch markers, darning needle

Finished Measurements: About 50” wide at top, 17” deep at center (after blocking)

Gauge: About 22-24 sts = 4” / 10cm in stockinette, but not crucial for this project.
