Gauge is not important, it can be made with any weight yarn and any needles, since it is made to measure, all you are messing with is thickness and density.
A gauge swatch (or two) is necessary.

Make this with 100% natural animal fiber. Exact composition does not matter, but no manufactured fibers. Wool and other animal fibers provide temperature regulating properties that are beneficial to the horse.

Measurements provided for a 16.2hh Thoroughbred mare.

Needed:
24” circular needles (or longer) in a size or two larger than stated on yarn label
DPNs of same size
At least 4oz of yarn that can felt- any weight, yardage varies by weight
About 2 pounds wool roving (favorite sources listed in pattern), amount depends on how thick you want the finished pad to be.
