The Ferla Box Bag was inspired by a desire to recreate my favourite bag, bought in Italy some years ago and now slightly past its best, in knitted form.

The pattern is written for 120m/131yds of main yarn and 100m/110yds of contrast to produce the noted size - 7.5 x 3.5 x 9 inches/19 x 9 x 23 cm. Information is provided to help with resizing.

You will need yarns of at least 12-16 ply (50m per 50g ball yarns), but can also knit this bag with multiple strands of finer yarn as shown by the samples. Yarn should be feltable wool as the bag is lightly fulled/felted after knitting. Superwash wools are not suitable for this project.

Ferla is knitted in one piece from the base up using a slip stitch pattern in two colours to produce a tweedy effect.

Printing notes: This is 6 page pattern, page 1 contains pictures and titles and page 6 stitch pattern illustrations and copyright information. All pattern information is found on pages 2-5 inclusive.

Thank you to my wonderful test knitters from the Free pattern Testers group for their feedback on this project - do have a look at the completed projects to see their gorgeous bags.

Updated version of the pattern posted on 13/12/2012 - changes largely cosmetic to layout and format - the pattern itself hasn’t changed.
