This super cozy fern hat can be knit in either Aran or DK weight yarn. The pattern has instructions for both yarn sizes. It fits heads 20” to 23” and you can adjust the ribbing size by using smaller or larger needles than suggested in the pattern. I often knit the ribbing with the Ktbl1,P1, for a tighter and more defined look.

The pattern is designed with 1.5-2” ribbing to be worn as a beanie or you can knit a longer brim up to 4” for a more slouchy look.

I’ve used Knitpicks City Tweed HW/ Aran weight and Hikoo Kenzie DK, Both yarns are super soft comfortable and warm. This hat is the family favorite. You will need 1 skein of either weight yarn listed in the pattern for the main color and about 40-50 yards for the colorwork. If using Hikoo Kenzie or other DK weight, you will use size 6 and 7 needles.

Guage for Kenzie yarn:
24 sts x 24 rows knit in 2 color pattern
Since there are a few long repeats I suggest catching the stitches about every 4th stitch.

I’ll be updating the pattern to use with fingering weight yarn in 2020.

Errata1: The pattern update has been released and messages sent For this one: V.1 Page 2 DK weight said to knit the 23 row chart on time. V.2 corrected this to say the 23 row chart should be knit once.

Errata 2: DK weight yarn decreases:
On the 8th decrease it says k8, k2tog.
This should be k1,k2tog, 11 stitches left
The next row should be k2tog,k1 (6 stitches left) then pull the yarn through these stitches.

The top photo with permission to use was knit by Symphonie Nadeau of Canada. Her pom poms are quite amazing and made by Akroche Tatuk from ‘recylcled animal fur and can be purchased here
