I wrote this very basic fairy light pattern to include on my entry for Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas Jumper Competition 2018 and it turned out they were my favourite part of the sweater.

The pattern can be knit in any 4ply yarn as long as the fabric created is sufficiently sturdy. Those shown are knit in Jamieson’s & Jamieson & Smith but I am currently knitting some in Baa Ram Ewe Pip Colourwork.

The baubles are knit in the round, starting with a 12 stitch cast on. They can be a little fiddly to cast on but are worth it!

The iCord shown is knit in West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4 ply as the nylon gives it a little extra strength.

The lights inside are optional and were really only added for the competition. Once added to a tree with other fairy lights, these look just perfect without any lighting.

Just to say - after I published this - I had a note on Ravelry to say that putting these on your fairy lights would be a fire hazard… i guess the name is confusing as these are fairy lights but they are definitely not fairy light covers! They were lit using stand alone battery operated lights for the Handmade Christmas show & to be photographed here but as per the lights section, I don’t recommend that for long term use! Please do not cover your fairy lights with these!
