This hat won honorable mention in the first Cherry Tree Hill Design Contest of 2009. Charming, disarming, the scale of it is quite perfect: you have a dainty little cable (worked back and forth in a strip to start) encircling your head, tiara-like. Joining this band is the only sewing. Then you pick up stitches around its perimeter, a lot of them, for a bloused beret-style effect. You work up from there and then decrease at the crown. You’re advised to make the initial cable band 22” long, but of course you make it long enough to fit the intended head, just pick up at the recommended rate, then bingo… bespoke millinery!
