FINN – Fish Pillow
FINN – Crochet Fish Pillow / Häkelkissen Fisch
Pattern in English (US terms) and German – deutsche Beschreibung weiter unten.
FINN is a large crochet fish pillow with a lot of character: a textured scale pattern, ribbed fins and a friendly shaped head with eyelids and an embroidered mouth. Gradient yarns make his body shimmer like real fish scales – and he’s a great scrap project.
Construction
The head starts with a magic ring and is then worked in rows in the back loop, which creates its ridged texture. The body is crocheted in 30 scale sections. Each section consists of a round of shells, a round of single crochet in the back loop and a round of double crochet. This way, the fish shape gradually develops. The first three sections leave space for the gills. You can make FINN longer or shorter by repeating a section.
Gills, eyelids, pectoral fins and tail are worked separately in rows in the back loop and sewn on. The fins and tail are double-layered for a ribbed, fishbone-like look. The mouth is stitched through the head with a running stitch.
The pattern includes
– Round-by-round and row-by-row instructions with stitch counts
– Photos for the shell stitch, gills, fins, tail and assembly
– A diagram for stitching the mouth
Stitches and techniques
Magic ring, chain, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet, increases and decreases, back loop only / front loop only, shell stitch, working in rows, sewing together
Yarn
The yarns listed are the colors used for the sample. FINN is a scrap-friendly project – you don’t need full balls. Any sport weight yarn that works with a 3.5 mm hook is suitable.
FINN is rated intermediate but approachable for adventurous beginners who know the basic stitches.
