Fire Dragon Motif Square
Unleash legendary power in your knitting with this Fire Dragon Motif Square Knitting Pattern! Featuring the fierce silhouette of a horned dragon framed in bold contrast, this striking design blends fantasy energy with graphic impact. Perfect for lovers of mythical creatures, dark fantasy, and bold symbolism, this powerful dragon square adds dramatic flair to any handmade project.
Worked flat with a garter stitch border framing the smooth stockinette center, this enchanting square is ideal for fantasy-themed blankets, magical pillows, storybook tote bags, wall panels, chair or seat covers, table decorations, bath mats, or even as a bold panel on a cozy sweater.
The pattern includes a clear colorwork chart and full row-by-row instructions. Use intarsia, duplicate stitch, or machine knitting to bring this iconic fire dragon to life — a timeless creature born from legend, ready to guard your next creation.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
The final size of the project will depend on the yarn and needle size you choose. Here are examples for three different yarn weights:
Sport weight (5 ply) with 3.5 mm (US 4) needles:
37 × 37 cm (15″ × 15″) — approx. 120 g
DK (8 ply) or worsted weight (8 ply) with 3.75 mm - 4 mm (US 5-7) needles (sample shown): 46 × 46 cm (18″ × 18″) — approx. 140–180 g
Aran weight (10 ply) with 5.5 mm (US 9) needles:
52 × 52 cm (20″ × 20″) — approx. 250 g
MATERIALS NEEDED
I used DK weight (8 ply) yarn — 140 g of YarnArt Creative, 100% cotton, 50 g ≈ 85 m / 1.8 oz ≈ 93 yds
Knitting needles: 3.75 mm (US 5)
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
If you want to match the sample size, use DK yarn with a similar gauge. However, you’re free to use any yarn you like! This project is highly adaptable — just choose suitable needles for your yarn and enjoy the process.
