This design features interlocking tile shapes in a diagonal arrangement, adding interest to the usual modular construction. It was inspired by the beautiful 19th century tiled floors which can still be found in many British homes, especially in porches and hallways. A touch of texture adds extra cosiness!

The pattern includes instructions for four specially-shaped motifs, a continuous join and a matching border. There is a separate file for each stage of construction, with plenty of photographs and useful tips to ensure a successful result, plus one 20-page file in English and one 25-page file in Spanish containing the whole pattern. Skill level: intermediate to advanced but all steps are clearly explained and illustrated, and help is always available if needed. Just send a PM or write to me at the email address in the pattern. Queries relating to the Spanish version will be passed on to Julia (see below).

Materials needed for the original shown (top photo):

  • Eleven x 100 gm balls of Deramores Studio DK (273 yd/250m per ball) - two each of four colours plus three of a fifth colour used in the motifs and also as the joining/main border colour.

  • Size US7 / 4.5mm and size US8 / 5.00mm hooks.

The full motif measures 9” across at the widest point and the finished afghan measures 35” x 45”. The total weight of the blanket is 1.5 lb (700g), and total yardage used 1911. All weights and measurements are approximate.

Any weight or type of yarn can of course be used instead, with the appropriate hooks - my wonderful testers both used different yarns so check their project pages for helpful details.

If you use five colours you will have some yarn left over, so fewer colours might mean fewer balls needed - impossible to say I’m afraid as it depends how you allocate them. You could always add fringing or corner tassels to use up any surplus, or make a small matching cushion… Apologies for adding to your stash!

Sincere and heartfelt thanks ❤️❤️ to my fabulous testers, Lara DreamsinCrochet and Heather Fluttershy01.

Thank you too to everyone who downloads this pattern - I hope you enjoy bringing a touch of Victoriana to your home!
