Firn
Named after firn — the aged, granular snow that forms high on a glacier, neither fresh nor fully frozen — this sweater shares its quiet resilience and warmth. Worked in unspun Manchega wool held together with silk-mohair, the fabric is light yet insulating, developing a soft halo after blocking. The beauty of the design lies in its simplicity. Worked from the top down with subtle shaping, it features an easy silhouette, generous ease, deep ribbed hems and cuffs, and a tall turtleneck.

MATERIALS
Yarn:
Yarn A: 4 (4, 4, 5, 5) (5, 5, 5, 6) plates of Manchelopis by Wooldreamers (100% Manchega wool, 251 yds / 230 m – 100 g), in the colourway Gris Medio, held double stranded.
Or approx. 830 (890, 965, 1025, 1075) (1135, 1190, 1240, 1290) yds / 760 (815, 880, 935, 980) (1035, 1085, 1135, 1180) m of heavy-worsted- to light-aran-weight yarn.
Note! The plates of Manchelopis are already prepared for working double-stranded, so the above yardage is correct for that yarn or the alternatives.
Yarn B: 5 (5, 5, 6, 6) (6, 6, 7, 7) balls of Silk Mohair by Isager (75% super kid mohair, 25% silk, 232 yds / 212 m – 25 g), in the colourway 7s.
Or approx. 950 (1020, 1105, 1175, 1230) (1295, 1365, 1425, 1485) yds / 870 (930, 1010, 1075, 1125) (1185, 1245, 1300, 1355) m of lace-weight silk-mohair yarn.
The yarns are held together throughout the pattern: 2 strands of Yarn A (1 strand if an alternative heavy-worsted to light-aran-weight yarn) and 1 strand of Yarn B.
Alternative yarn suggestions are for example Léttlopi by Ístex or Gilliatt by De Rerum Natura held single (for Yarn A) and Tilia by Filcolana or Soft Silk Mohair by Knitting for Olive (for Yarn B).
Needles: US 8 / 5 mm at least 40” / 100 cm circular needles (for the body and sleeves), US 7 / 4.5 mm 40” / 100 cm circular needles (for hem, neck and cuff ribbing).
Notions: Stitch markers, locking stitch markers, stitch holders.
GAUGE
13 sts and 24 rnds and rows to 4” / 10 cm on US 8 / 5 mm needles in St St, after blocking.
18 sts and 22 rnds to 4” / 10 cm on US 7 / 4.5 mm needles in 1 x 1 Rib, after blocking.
NOTES
This sweater is worked from the top down, mostly in St St. The back is cast on first and shaped with German Short Rows before being worked to the underarm. The front shoulders are then picked up from the back shoulder cast-on edge and worked separately, with increases shaping the neckline. Once the shoulders are joined, the front is worked to the underarm. The front and back are then joined and the body is worked in the round to the hem, where it is finished with 1 x 1 Rib.
Stitches for the turtleneck are picked up around the neckline and worked in 1 x 1 Rib. Sleeve stitches are picked up around the armholes and worked in the round to the cuffs, with decreases shaping the sleeves. The cuffs are finished with 1 x 1 Rib.
