Fisherman’s Beard is a versatile neck warmer. The design is inspired by an old-fashioned fisherman’s beard. Make it either with a rollneck or turtleneck collar. It is worked in k1, p1 rib and has twisted fringes at the front. It is designed to work as a neck warmer that has fringes only at the front. However, you can easily add fringes to the back too, if you wish.

Fisherman’s Beard is worked top-down and in the round. This means that you work the collar first. Then you increase to create a narrow shoulder. Then you divide the work into front and back. You make a back piece if you wish and then cast off. Then you work the front.
You can adjust the collar, back, front and fringes to your heart’s content.

Measurements: Circumference, neck: about 38 (42) 46 cm

Twisting fringes is an art form that takes time to learn. The more you twist the loop, the tighter the fringe – but also the more difficult it is to handle. Practise on the pattern sample piece until you can make fringes you like. See page 5.
