The Flamenco Swirl shawl was inspired by a 2022 resolution to work through as many stashed and gifted singleton yarns as humanly possible! No more languishing in drawers!!! The original four yarns had no mates, but plenty of shared hues. I enjoyed the making and the wearing of this shawl so much that subsequent versions of the shawl were created in several single brand, worsted bases from companies like MadelineTosh, Malabrigo and Dream in Color. The pattern requires four hanks of yarn with a minimum of 240 yds per hank. The colorway can take on every maker’s personality: from subdued natural tones to neon brights.

Named for its bold ruffle, this shawl begins with a basic tab that grows with a pattern of yarn over increases. The striped body is followed by a section of twisted rib; allowing for a smooth transition into forced kfb increases. The rapid increase in stitches coaxes the fabric into that sinuous ruffle. Bound off with one yarn, held doubled, the bold i-cord accentuates the ruffle in all the right ways.

This is a shawl that benefits from a wet blocking. The ruffle will remain quite tight if not pinned open in blocking (photos follow)

If knit at gauge, the Flamenco Swirl shawl has a wingspan of 84 inches and a depth of 36 inches, making it a versatile accessory. It has ample yardage to be worn over the shoulders as a shawl, draped over the head as a hood and scarf combo, or draped with the center point in front for a luxurious double wrap.
