Approximate finished sizes (including ears):

  • Small: 5” x 6” // 10 x 14 cm
  • Medium: 6” x 8” // 15 x 21.5 cm
  • Large: 7.5” x 10” // 19 x 25.5 cm
  • X-Large: 10” x 13” // 25 x 33 cm

You will hold TWO strands of lace weight along with one strand of worsted weight for this project. Yardage listed accounts for this.

Needles & notions needed:

  • 4.0 mm (US 6) circular needles, 32” // 80 cm (or length preferred for magic loop)
  • Craft/pillow stuffing, tapestry needle, scissors
  • 2 stitch holders (or scrap yarn)

Gauge is not crucial for this project.

Video links/suggestions for cast on, magic loop method, and embroidery techniques are included.

This pattern uses Judy’s Magic Cast-On, which uses the magic loop technique (knitting a small circumference with needles on a long cord) to begin seamlessly and is written continuing the magic loop method for the body. However, you can use other preferred methods if you don’t wish to continue with Magic Loop.

The flat cat is worked in the round and very much like a toe up sock, starting with Judy’s Magic Cast-On at the bottom and increasing on opposite sides of the work until it’s the final width. Then, it’s solid stockinette stitch until you reach the body height. Ears are worked right off of the body, with decreases to shape them to a point on each side one at a time, after which the top of the head is closed with a kitchener stitch.

I designed this cat to be a canvas for any embroidered decoration you may want to add, be it a face, flowers, feet, or nothing at all! The larger sizes are perfect as a small, decorative pillow, and the small sizes are great for a small toy or accessory. While this is NOT a learn-to-embroider pattern, some stitch suggestions and drawings are included to decorate your flat cat.
