Pattern notes
Each stitch is divided with a , (comma)
When it says “3sc” it means “insert a sc in the next 3 stitches”.
Increases explained:
When it says “2sc in 1 x 3” or “sc inc x 3” it means “3 times: 2 sc in the same stitch”.
All rounds end with a slip stitch (slst) to the first stitch to join.
Recommended yarn
Acrylic 50%/Cotton 50% works the best. Cotton may be too stiff.
Shape: It’s important that the coaster hold its shape: turned down and flipped. The shape is best achieved by:
using 2 yarn strands at the same time. You can also just use 1 strand, it will flip too but the coaster will be flimsy.
using a slightly smaller hook
keeping a high tension (but not too high, or it will be too stiff).
This way the coaster is sturdy, otherwise it will not flip as desired. But don’t make it too sturdy or it will be too stiff to change shape. I use 1 skein and just find the yarn end twisted around the skein and the yarn end in the center pull. This way I don’t need to use 2 skeins for just one color. Details can be made with 1 strand.
Size: The coasters have a diameter of 11 cm (absolutely flat), but since the edges turn up the diameter is actually around 10 cm. Normal coasters are around 10 cm. Too small or too big? Add or remove rounds until you meet your desired size.
Steps: Every coaster starts by making the circle.
Continue to make the head in one piece. Every head has the same number of starting stitches (12sc). The flipping effect only works after you add the head!
Separately make the arms and place them to your own liking.
Add the (facial) details. Tip: when sewing into the head, try to only sew on the surface of the head. This way, the yarn is not visible on the other side of the head.
