Based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale “Rapunzel,” Disney’s fiftieth animated film, Tangled (2010) is the story of a young girl with magical glowing hair who has spent her life locked in a tower. When a charming thief accidentally stumbles upon her home, Rapunzel finally decides it’s time to see the world—particularly the glowing lanterns that appear in the sky every year on her birthday. Drawing inspiration from rococo-style French painter Fragonard, the animators wanted the film to be romantic and lush, giving the 3D style of animation a 2D feel. One of the most visually stunning scenes in the film comes during the Academy Award®-nominated song “I See the Light,” when Rapunzel and Flynn Rider drift on a boat through the glowing, floating lanterns, slowly realizing they are falling in love. Lit annually by the people of the kingdom to help guide the missing princess home, the lanterns are painted with the symbol of the kingdom—a radiant sun. It is only when she returns to her tower that Rapunzel realizes she has been unconsciously painting this symbol her whole life and that she is in fact the princess the kingdom has been seeking.

Decorated with stranded colorwork sun motifs and stylized hanging lantern motifs, these fingerless mitts are worked in the round from the bottom up. An easy feminine picot trim makes for a sturdy cuff, while a thumb gusset ensures a comfortable fit. An ideal accessory for the next time you need to escape your tower or when you want to give a gift, these romantic mittens are sure to bring a ray of light to the wearer.
