FLORICULTURE
Hexagon blankets are typical for crochet, but why wouldn’t a knit shawl from hexagons be brilliant as well?! Floriculture is a light and airy summer shawl to wrap around your shoulders as the summer sun is setting. When the hexagons are put in place, they look like an orderly flower bed.

GENERAL
Floriculture is made up from several lace hexagons that in turn are knit centre out in the round. These are later sewn together. The lace is simple and fun and the hexagons work up quickly. The shawl is completed by a couple of half-hexagons and triangles that fill out the sides. The beds of flowers are framed by a grass edge - a few rows of green garter edge to finish off the shawl.

SIZE
Approximately 180 cm wingspan x 60 cm deep in sample shawl.

NEEDLES & NOTIONS

  • 4 mm/US6/UK8 circular needles 40 cm/16”
  • 4 mm/US6/UK8 circular needles 80 cm/32”
  • 4 mm/US6/UK8 double pointed needles
  • 6 stitch markers (one different than the others)
  • Darning needle.

YARN
One strand of merino silk fingering yarn and one strand of mohair silk yarn held together.

The sample shawl is knit in yarn from Humlalyckan the Yarn Farm, the Dahlia collection, https://www.humlalyckan.se/. Support your local hand dyer or yarn store by buying your lovely yarn from them!

Merino silk fin (fingering, 400 m/100g),
75% merino, 25% mulberry silk:
Color A: 100g/400 m yellow (Golden Scepter)
Color B: 200g/800 m pink (Waltzing Matilda)
Color C: 200g/800 m green (Innocent Silence)

Mohair silk (420 m/50g), 75% kid mohair, 25% silk
Color A: 50g/420 m yellow (Golden Scepter)
Color B: 50g/420 m pink (Waltzing Matilda)
Color C: 100g/840 m green (Innocent Silence).

The shawl is fairly large and very cozy. If you prefer a smaller shawl and/or want to use a little less yarn, skip the mohair silk to knit it in only fingering yarn and go down a needle size to 3.5 mm/US4/UK9.5. This way you will also use less than 1 skein of color B.
