Center single crochet makes a smooth, sturdy fabric that is the perfect canvas for embroidery. Work the embroidery using pieces of purchased lace pinned to the fabric as a template. This “paint-by- number” approach makes it easy to achieve neat, tidy, and symmetrical embroidered motifs.

Difficulty Fair amount of focus required.

Finished Size About 9” in diameter.

Yarn DMC Natura Just Cotton (100% cotton; 170 yd / 1.75 oz): #03 sable, 3 balls.

Hook Size I/9 (5.5 mm). Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.

Notions Yarn needle; st markers, 5 same color, 1 contrasting color; 16 cm purse frame with handle; 9” wide cardboard piece, 1; quilters pins; purchased lace fabric similar color to yarn; embroidery needle and embroidery floss in a variety of colors (see Notes) (Sample used DMC 6-Strand Embroidery Floss: 225, 223, 3011, 3013, 3 skeins each and 3721, 3809, 935, 3817, 2 skeins each); plastic bags (optional).

Gauge Rnds 1–9 = 3.5” in diameter.

Notes If you are making both the shoes (see next pattern) and the purse, you will need 4 balls total.

The lace purchased for this project should have motifs large enough to embroider. Colors and amounts of embroidery floss will change depending on lace chosen.
