I’ve been making my Forest Gnome Hat for years now, and lately I’ve been making them with variations on a split brim style. The pattern has the same size range as the Forest Gnome Hat (toddler through xxl adult), but with adjustments for a cozy split brim fit.

The pattern calls for basic crochet skills (chain, and slip stitch) on the “tails,” but if you are not comfortable with crochet, you can also braid some yarn and attach the braids to the hat or try an i-cord technique. This pattern only gives specific instructions for the crochet option.

The Forest Gnome Hat is made with Super Bulky yarn and is shown here in Malabrigo Rasta and Hedgehog Fibres Super Bulky.

A quick note about sizing: You may find, as I have at markets, that some adults wear youth sizes, and some children wear adult sizes, as our heads vary so much, but as a general guideline: there are 5 sizes in the pattern that range, approximately from toddler, child/youth, adult s/m, adult 1/xl to xxl adult.
