Forest Stream Hat
This relaxed, twisted stitch hat is designed to make beautiful use of those interesting single skeins you’ve been eyeing or saving up. With instructions for two different weights of yarn from Bulky and Super Bulky, this hat is perfect for gift knitting.
Level of Difficulty: Advanced Beginner
Skills Used: Long Tail Cast On, Knit (K), Purl (P), Knitting in the Round, Right Twist (RT), Left Twist (LT), Slip Slip Knit (SSK), Knit 2 Stitches Together (K2tog), Chart Reading, Standard Bind-Off.
Approximate Sizes (Laid Flat):
Bulky: Child 7.25” tall for 19.5”-21” head (Adult 8” tall for 21”-23” head)
Super Bulky: Child 7.5” tall for 19.5”-21” head (Adult 8.75” tall for 21”-23” head)
Materials:
- Yarn snips/scissors 1 darning needle
1 stitch marker which fits Small and Large Needles 2 separate circular knitting needles or sets of interchangeable needle tips (smaller and larger size) with a cord in your preferred circumference for hat knitting.
Suggested needle sizes provided below but adjust your needle size up or down as your personal gauge requires to get a medium density, flexible, stockinette fabric on your Large Needle.
Bulky Suggested Needle Sizes: Small - US 9 (5.5mm, UK 5) and Large - US Size 10.5 (6.5mm, UK 3)
Super Bulky Suggested Needle Sizes: Small - US 11 (8mm, UK 0) and Large - US Size 15 (10mm, UK 000)
Gauge: Stockinette stitch in the round on Large Needle for 4”x4” washed and blocked.
Bulky: 11 Stitches wide by 17 Rows tall
Super Bulky: 8 Stitches wide by 12 Rows tall
Recommended Yarns:
Bulky: Malabrigo Chunky Merino: Approximately 1 skein OR 100 grams/100 yards of Bulky Yarn.
Super Bulky: Malabrigo Rasta/Dream in Color Savvy/Neighborhood Fiber Co. Rustic Bulky: Approximately 1 (1,1) skein OR 150 grams/90 yards of Super Bulky Yarn.
