Fox in the Woods baby blanket is in the style of Native American Imagery. As we go through each section, I will explain the symbolism that is represented there, although symbols will change from tribe to tribe and will be different when combined with others. The information I will give is the most basic interpretations. As a disclaimer from the start, this design is inspired from Native American culture, I have no personal links to any tribe and I while I am very aware of a stronger cultural history, it is not something I am well versed in. Please take this blanket as intended which is an expression of art and joy!

To me, this blanket is a fox alert and playing in a forest beneath a moonlit sky. There is an element of wildness in this blanket and will be perfect for a woodland nursery. This blanket came about as a challenge in my Facebook Group for me to design a blanket from scratch in 24 hours! The theme and elements were voted for in the Group and they have been able to watch some of the design process in my progress posts. I look forward to seeing photos of the work.

Techniques used:
• UK terms – BLDC – Back loop double crochet,
• US terms - BLSC – Back loop single crochet,
• Slip Stitches

What you will need for baby blanket size:
• Colour A (background) 3-4 balls of dk yarn – 100g balls
• Colours B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J (pattern) 9 colours 1 x ball of dk yarn – 100g balls per colour
• I have used Stylecraft Special DK for this as I love the vibrancy of the colours and the yarn is a lovely texture and easy to work with.
o Colour A White or Parchment
o Colour B Black
o Colour C Claret (Fox section)
o Colour D Copper (Fox section)
o Colour E Gold (Fox section)
o Colour F Empire (Arrows and Moon sections)

• 4.5mm hook
• Tapestry needle for ends
• Scissors
• Stitch markers

Dimensions: Assuming DK acrylic yarn with 4.5mm hook and 150 stitches x 155 rows: approximately 36 inches x 36 inches (including border) 90cm x 90cm – the size of a small baby blanket

Gauge: 19 stitches x 15 rows for 10cm/4in square using BLDC (UK terms)/BLSC (US terms)

Other colour palettes can be played with. A few ideas have been included for you to consider.

  • Two colours only, background and pattern. Expect to use 3-4 x 100g balls per colour
  • Ombre/colour changing yarn to give a slowly changing colour design
  • Inverting the design so the background colour follows the gradient and the pattern itself is a single colour
