DESCRIPTION
Francy is a shawl inspired by a woman named Frances, who was a close and meaningful person to the dyer of the yarn I used. Frances was a lover of history, Hallmark movies, candy, and worked as a social worker for most of her life. She also was one of the first black women to work in the state-building where she lived. She was an amazing woman that helped so many people in her lifetime.

With this design, I looked to Frances’ love of history for inspiration and found another amazing woman to inspire me as well, Sojourner Truth. The iconic photo of Sojourner Truth with knitting in her hands holds so much power and I like to imagine we all can be that bold and brave. We all can stand up, speak the truth, and fight for justice. This is the time. I feel the power of this design is what we all need right now to keep pushing ourselves to speak up against injustice and racism in our society.

Francy is all about celebrating the strength and power of those who chose to dedicated their lives to be agents of change just like Frances and Sojourner Truth did. The simple garter stitch and eyelets give this design a sturdy vintage feel that you will love to knit while listening to your favorite podcast or audiobook. The beautiful lace border and picot bind off edge evoke a delicate and whimsical feel that reminds us that strength and vulnerability go hand and hand.

Rebecca is shown wearing the Size 2 shawl that has an approximate wingspan of 64”.

This pattern has been tech edited and test knit for ALL sizes.

CONSTRUCTION
Francy is a winged triangle shawl that is worked flat from the top to the triangle point. It is worked mostly in garter stitch with simple lacy eyelet rows. It has an easy horseshoe lace border and a picot bind-off.

YARN & YARDAGE
Birch Hollow Fibers-Sylvia Sock (Fingering, 75% Superwash Merion/25% Nylon, 463 yds/423 m, 100 g/3.5 oz)
Colorway: Frances

NOTE for SIZE 2 ONLY: I used 2 skeins of Birch Hollow Fibers Sylvia Sock to make the Size 2 shawl which is 926 yds. The yardage estimates factor in differences in knitting tension and if you choose to make a swatch separately from your shawl. So at your own risk, you could maybe make the Size 2 with less than my recommended yardage amount.
