Fredericton is a unisex cardigan knit with two strands of rustic Canadian wool held together to create a marled effect. It is worked in Reverse Stocking stitch to add even more texture to this otherwise very simple garment. Shawl collar, set-in pockets, rolled up cuffs, and optional crochet collar edging are understated details that make this a wardrobe staple that is classic and timeless.
The back and front pieces of this cardigan are worked as one piece to the underarms, then each front and back are worked separately back and forth in rows. Sleeves are worked in the round with the sleeve cap worked flat. Sleeve caps are sewn into armholes.
The body is worked primarily in Reverse Stocking St, while the sleeves are worked in Stocking st and are then turned “inside out”. Please pay attention to what is a WS row and what is a RS row while you are knitting!
The sleeve is knit 5cm/ 2” longer then average to accommodate the rolled back cuff. Keep this in mind if
adjusting sleeve length.

Recommended Yarn
Briggs & Little Sport (100% Canadian wool; 393m/ 430yds per 113 g/ 4 oz skein) in two colours

Light Colour Version (yarn amounts for women’s sizes given)
A: Natural White 2 (3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4) skeins
B: Khaki 2 (3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4) skeins

Dark Colour Version (yarn amounts for men’s sizes given)
A: Dark Grey 3 (3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5) skeins
B: Brown 3 (3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5) skeins

Optional: Approx 20 yards of a worsted or aran weight yarn in a contrasting colour for the crocheted collar border. Light colour version uses Briggs & Little Heritage in Brown.

As an alternative to two strands of a sport weight yarn held together, a single strand of an aran weight wool can be used to achieve a solid colour fabric. Although I cannot guarantee exact yardage requirements, here’s my best estimation using Briggs & Little Heritage:

Briggs & Little Heritage (100% Canadian Wool; 197 m/ 215 yds per 113 g/ 4 oz skein)
Women’s sizes: 5 (5, 5, 6, 7, 7, 7) skeins
Men’s Sizes: 5 (6, 6, 7, 8, 8, 9) skeins
If in doubt, buy an extra skein and please be sure to check gauge!
