Anyone up for a stashbuster? How about a way to use up those cute mini skeins? The Fremont Johnny hat is a fun and fast colorwork hat in toddler to adult sizes, with options for standard beanie and slouch fits. The pattern is written for five colors, but could easily be worked with more or fewer…there’s room to be creative!

Construction

This hat is worked from the bottom up in the round, starting with 1x1 ribbing. From there you will knit stockinette throughout, and the colorwork continues all the way to the top while decreases are worked for the crown.

Measurements and Sizing

  • All Gretchen Mac Design patterns are #sizeinclusive.
  • Sizes: 1 (2, 3, 4, 5) / Toddler (Child, Adult, Adult L, Adult XL)
  • Finished hat circumference: 15.25 (16.75, 19.75, 21.25, 22.75)“ / 38 (42, 49.5, 53, 57) cm for the beanie fit, or 18.25 (19.75, 22.75, 24.5, 26)” / 45.5 (49.5, 57, 61.5, 65) cm for the slouch fit.
  • 2 - 4” / 5 - 10 cm of negative ease recommended for the beanie fit. For the slouch version, a slightly looser fit will create more drape and have better ‘slouchiness.’

Needles & Notions:

  • US 5 / 3.75 mm and US 6 / 4.0 mm DPNs or circular needles, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • If using circular needles, the cable should be 12 - 20” / 30-50 cm depending on the size you are knitting, or your preferred length if doing the magic loop technique.
  • Stitch markers and tapestry needle.

Gauge: 21 sts and 24 rounds = 4” / 10 cm, worked in stranded knitting in the round on US 6 / 4 mm needles, after blocking.
