The bright colors and tropical flowers in the paintings of the Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo, have long been a great favorite of mine. I find them so alive and vibrant. These socks pay homage to the beautiful paintings created by Frida by employing her signature bright colors, oversized graphic design elements and the utilization of just about every bit of the available surface area.

These socks are worked from the top down with what I call a double wedge heel (I’m sure there are other terms, but this is what I call it). After a lot of back and forth design work and knitting, I was able to neatly insert the floral and leaf motifs into the parts of the heel in an organic way without disrupting the overall design.

Because of the constraints of the colorwork pattern size, only 2 sizes are offered: S/M (64 ST cast on) and L/XL (80 ST cast on). Pictured is the L/XL size modeled by my DIL who has US size 10 feet (European size 41). They are worked top down and feature a standard wide toe.

Yarn recommendations: solid contrasting, bright colors are highly recommended. Highly variegated yarns are not appropriate. I have worked the pictured pair with two flower colors and one stem/leaf color but more colors, (scrappy knitting) would look great also.
