This chunky knit pillow cushion cover DIY pattern is the ideal housewarming gift or accessory to brighten up a summer patio party. It also is a great gift for women or men! Designed by Freda Moss Designs.

Impress your friends, family and neighbours with this unique knitted cushion. It is a statement piece for your home. And watch their jaws drop when they realise you’ve made it yourself!

Feel proud and satisfied that you’ve created something stunning and individual with your own hands! And you can make it in any colour you like to ensure it is truly unique.

It looks complicated, but is surprisingly simple to make. It knits up quickly because it is made with super chunky yarn. You can make the whole thing from start to finish in one whole day!

Frost flowers are ice crystals that grow on young sea ice in Polar Regions of the Earth. The ice crystals clump together to form flower shapes up to 4cm wide. They only grow in very special conditions and are rare to see. When I studied meteorology at university, I learned all about frost flowers and was amazed by them. I was inspired to design this Frost Flower cushion because the pattern reminded me of those icy flowers I learned about at university.

This is a knitting and sewing pattern to make your own cushion cover. It has a knitted front cover and a fabric back with a zipper opening so you can fill it with a cushion pad.

I used a super chunky, ethically sourced, merino yarn in hot pink to knit the front of the cushion. And a medium weight cotton fabric in a solid grey colour for the rest of the cover.

You will need:
200g super chunky yarn
Approx 0.5m x 0.5m iron-on interlining, heavy weight
Approx 1.0m x 0.5m medium weight fabric, without much stretch, such as a woven cotton, lighter weight denim or linen
A cushion pad measuring 0.45m x 0.45m (45cm x 45cm)
12mm single pointed knitting needles
Sewing thread
Cutting, sewing and ironing tools

The pattern provides instructions for making a cushion cover that measures 45cm x 45cm. It can be adjusted to fit any size of cushion.

This cushion cover is knitted in star stitch knitting stitch with a super chunky yarn to create the front of the cover. The rest is made with fabric, and is preferably sewn with a sewing machine to get a professional finish, although it can also be done by hand.

This is a pattern for intermediate knitters. You need to be able to cast on and cast off, knit, purl, and how to purl stitches together.
