This chess set is a great introduction to knitting on double pointed needles – the pieces are quick to knit, and can be made in a variety of sizes and colors depending on the intended recipient. I named this chess set after my favorite chess “strategy” – or lack thereof. The knight is also my favorite of these knitted pieces; a great challenge with both short rows and bobbles shaping the tiny knitted horse.

Yarn: The set was knit in Paton’s Grace (sport wt., 136 yds / skein, 1 skein each color), though any yarn can be substituted. I recommend a sport or fingering weight yarn to keep the pieces a realistic size, but a thicker yarn would make a great toy-set for kids. Pick something with good stitch definition.

Needles: I used size 2 dpns, though I tend to knit a bit loosely so you may want to go down a needle size. Just use a needle size or two smaller than what you’d normally use for your chosen yarn.

Gauge: A little tighter than whatever you’d normally have with your chosen yarn (so the pieces can stand up, and stuffing doesn’t show through).

Other materials: Stuffing (optional, but recommended)
