I have been experimenting with club headcovers since I started golfing 10 years ago. Many orders and improvements later, here is the best pattern out there (I think anyway). When you actually play golf, you see what the sun/weather does to yarny things-it fades, it gets little holes from the clubs banging into each other and those cute pompoms-well they start to loosen and lose their strings. That sun is brutal-just remember what it is doing to our skin if it does this to yarn
Anyway, back to the pattern…it is worked top down starting with Icord, then you work the actual head cover with wool that will felt along with fur yarn of some sort-I’ve used Fun fur and Hobbly Lobby brand with good results(purple are Hobby L. and blk/wht are fun fur). This is placed on waste yarn and felted, then sts are picked up and the sock portion is worked in an acrylic yarn that holds up well. The felting makes the cover very durable, no holes!
They are worked completely in the round and you can use whatever method you prefer-the pattern is written for magic loop but you can substitute.
There is only one size but guidelines are given for adjusting if you wish to. There is no gauge, they will be felted and that will take care of differences in knitting tension. For the sock portion, if you are a loose knitter, you might want to go down a needle size for a nice firm material.
I used 100% wool, no superwash and an acrylic for the sock portion as this tends not to fuzz as much.
I used beads on a binder ring attached to the Icord to identify each club and I found little number charms which also work well. I like the idea of this as you can change the numbers/beads if you change clubs(which we all do).
Hope you like the pattern-it will be free for the time being to celebrate golf in the Olympics and it’s my 31st pattern published.
Please favorite it and post your projects, thanks.
