Gansey Beanie
Cosy beanie hat inspired by the traditional patterns of Gansey jumpers.
Measurements
To fit - small, (medium) adult head, & can be easily lengthened by adding pattern repeats as required, Length is approx 26-27cm, (8.5”), circumference is 13.5” (15”) unstretched,21” (23”) stretched fully.
Materials
100g DK yarn, or 5 ply Guernsey yarn, wool or wool blend for warmth.
Sample 1 (medium) was knit with 50g Balmerino DK,100% Scottish merino yarn - 188 yds/172 meters/50g in the colourway Harebell. (used the whole ball)
Sample 2 (medium) is Natur-ally Yarns BFL DK, 100% Bluefaced Leicester wool - 246 yards/225 meters/100 grams, in Woad & the samples weigh approx 54g.
Sample 3 (small) is Natur-ally Yarns BFL DK, 100% Bluefaced Leicester wool, Lilac Wine, a small size, with a doubled rib. weighs 66g.
Needles
3.25mm circular needles (80cm length for magic loop) or DPNs for the garter stitch edging.
3.75mm circular needles (80cm length) or DPNs for size medium.
Notions
1 cable needle, stitch markers, waste yarn & a darning needle.
Tension / Gauge
22 sts & 30 rows to 10cm (4”) square over stocking stitch with DK wool & 3.75mm needles, and measured after blocking.
Notes on adapting size
Aran yarn could be used to knit a larger size on 4mm needles & 3.50mm for the ribbed edges.
For a more slouchy beanie, start chart 1 on R 13, then repeat chart 1 again.
This also could be adapted for a 2cm smaller size by omitting 1 stitch each side of the textured diamond, ie, sts 9 & 23 of the chart.
