The Gaon Cardigan Aran is a seamless, top-down cardigan featuring three-by-one texture all over and a button band worked up at the same time. The top back panel is worked, then the shoulders are worked. The three pieces are then connected and continued down. The sleeves are then picked up and worked top-down, in the round, and short rows are added along the shoulders and the tops of sleeves as they are worked to ensure a comfortable fit.

Sizing (#sizeinclusive):

Body Circumference:

  • 40.5 (43.75, 48.5, 51.75) 55.5, 60.25, 63.5 (67.5, 72, 75.25) inches Detailed schematics in photos

Yarn:
Worsted or Aran Weight
- Sample uses MO Fibers Targhee Worsted, in Honey

Yarn requirements:

  • 1180 (1280, 1440, 1530) 1660, 1800, 1940 (2070, 2220, 2370) meters
  • 1290 (1400, 1570, 1670) 1820, 1970, 2120 (2260, 2430, 2590) yards

Needles:

  • 4.5 mm, or US 7, for the main fabric, or a needle size that allows you to match gauge
  • 4.0 mm, or US 6, for ribbing, or a needle size 0.5 mm less than your main needle

Gauge:

  • 20 stitches24 rows for 10 cm10 cm or 4 inch4 inch unstretched in 31 ribbing
  • 17 stitches24 rows for 10 cm10 cm or 4 inch4 inch stretched gently in 31 ribbing --- It is important to wash and block your swatch the same way you will treat the actual garment, as ribbing tends to grow with washing. I do not recommend you stretch the swatch too much during blocking, as the body portion of the cardigan will not stretch naturally. The shoulders of the cardigan will stretch, which I’ve accounted for by providing the stretched gauge.

Notions:

  • 2 stitch markers
  • Clip-on markers to count rows
  • Extra yarn/stitch holder to rest stitches on
  • Darning needle to seam sides and weave in ends
  • Three 35mm buttons --- Because 35mm buttons can be difficult to find, I have included notes on how to use 25mm buttons as well!
