The time has come at last! #ShinyGiantCat is HAPPENING.

Two cats, two years, and uncountable hours, this tutorial is complete and ready for other’s viewing.

Due to the size of the pattern, I have split the video tutorial into 10 parts, plus an introduction video. This makes it easier for me, but also means it’s easier for someone using a mix of PDF and videos. You get to jump to each section you need.

The introduction video was released on 16 May 2021 (AEST), it covers the standard introduction details such as yarn, hook, materials, and release schedule. It also shares history of the project and shows various footage of the finished plushie I took before I shipped it off.

The first pattern video was up on 23 May 2021, with a new section releasing every 2 weeks after. There are 10 parts in total, with the final being how to join it all. All parts are now live on both YouTube and the PDF section here, as of 26 September 2021.

If you’re coming in new, you can download the “Complete” PDF in a single document. The parts will be taken down next month, but I wanted to give people who started the crochet along a chance to download the last parts.

If you’re joining in the making as each video goes live, but sure to share on social media with #ShinyGiantCat or check out the thread for how others are going!

In this series I am using an unlabelled yarn, it seems to be either a thick 8 ply (DK weight) yarn, or 10 ply Aran weight. Based on colours it seems it is Red Heart Super Saver, in colours: carrot, black and aran. I don’t know how much of each, due to no labels.

I use a 4.5mm hook, but my tension is quite tight. You may find a 4mm is better. Be sure to do a test run and see if there are gaps in the yarn, which would show stuffing under strain.

Or you can use 8ply yarn and 3.5mm hook (or 3mm if thin yarn) if that’s your preference, but it will result in a smaller finished plushie.

Other miscellaneous items include:

  • yarn needle
  • scissors
  • a LOT of polyfil fibre (no really, a lot)
  • stitch markers and/or sewing pins

I use US terminology in my videos, which affects some terms.
US Terminology = UK Terminology:

  • CH - Chain = Chain
  • MC - Magic Circle = Magic Circle
  • SL ST - Slip Stitch = Slip Stitch
  • SC - Single Crochet = DC Double Crochet
  • HDC - Half Double Crochet = Half Treble Crochet
  • DC - Double Crochet = Treble Crochet
  • BLO - Back Loop Only= Back Loop Only
  • Dec - Decrease= Decrease
  • Inc - Increase= Increase
  • SC4Inc - single crochet 4 increase – turning 1 stitch into 4
  • Turn - turn the project to work back along the stitches
