Inspired by the classic gingham fabric pattern, these mittens transform a familiar textile motif into engaging colourwork. Contrasting colours — and fibres, if desired — highlight the graphic design, creating plenty of opportunities for personalisation. The simple yet satisfying colourwork makes for an enjoyable knit, while the finished mittens provide warmth and comfort on cold winter days.

GAUGE
22 sts x 25 rnds to 4” / 10 cm on US 7 / 4.5 mm needles in Gingham Colourwork Patt (1 strand of Yarn 1 and 2 strands of Yarn 2), after blocking.

22 sts x 25 rnds to 4” / 10 cm US 6 / 4 mm needles in St St (2 strands of Yarn 1), after blocking.

NOTES
Beginning with 2 strands of the main colour wool, you work the cuff of the mitten in 2 x 2 Rib. Switching to 1 strand of wool held with 2 strands of each mohair, you alternate between colours and yarns to work the palm in the Gingham Colourwork pattern, using waste yarn to set up an afterthought thumb along the way. You close the top of the mitten with 2 strands of the main colour wool again, and then complete the thumb.
