Gingham Pullover
This pattern is now available through The Patchwork Pullover listing (both patterns are included together).
This design was inspired by the original Patchwork Pullover design, but in a lovely gingham style with some modifications for a more springy sweater! It is designed with some of the beautiful colours of the Spring tonal yarn from Ashley of Sewrella. It has a bit less positive ease, a more cropped body length, and shorter ribbed sections on the hem and collar, all features which I felt gave the pullover a more spring feel! It is a size inclusive design, written in 9 sizes from 34.5-70 inch / 86.5-175 cm finished bust circumference. This design is intended to be worn with about 12-20% positive ease.
Sizes offered:
1(2, 3, 4)(5, 6, 7)(8, 9)
Finished sweater full bust of:
34.5 (39, 43.25, 47.5)(52, 56.25, 62.25)(67.5, 70) inches / 86.5 (97.5, 108, 119)(130, 140.5, 155.5)(169, 175) cm
Note: The sizing increments vary across the sizes due to the adjusted patchwork grid for the smallest and largest sizes.
To fit actual full bust of:
28.75-30.75 (32.5-34.75, 36-38.5, 39.5-42.5)(43.25-46.5, 46.75-50.25, 51.75-55.5)(56.25-60.25, 58.25-62.5) inches / 72-77 (81.5-87, 90-96.5, 99-106.5)(108-116.5, 117-125.5, 129.5-139)(140.5-150.5, 145.5-156.5) cm
Note: The sizes reflect the FINISHED bust measurements in inches / cm of the sweater, and listed below you can see the recommended actual bust range for each size. The sweater is designed with 12-20% proportional positive ease. To determine the size you wish to knit, measure your bust, and multiply by 1.12-1.2 to find the closest size. If your upper and full bust measurements fall into different sizes, you may wish to choose size based on upper bust, as the additional increases in the body to the full bust measurement are easily adjustable. The sample is knit with about 19% positive ease (Size 4 on a 40 inch / 100 cm bust).
Needles recommended:
4.5 mm / US 7 / UK 7 (or size needed to obtain gauge) - main body
4 mm / US 6 / UK 8 (or one size down from the main needle) - ribbing
Cord length to match your bust measurement as well as 9-16 inch / 22.5-40 cm cord for the sleeves (or DPNs or 32-40 inch / 80-100 cm cord for the magic loop method).
Gauge:
Stockinette: Using 4.5 mm / US 7 / UK 7 (body) needles and working in stockinette, both flat and in the round. 4 x 4 inch / 10 x 10 cm = 18.5 sts x 24 rows/rounds
Ribbing: Using 4 mm / US 6 / UK 8 (ribbing) needles and working in 1x1 ribbing in the round. 4 x 4 inch / 10 x 10 cm = 18 sts x 30 rounds
Note: If your stitch count is correct for gauge but round count is a bit off in either direction, continue using this needle size, but keep in mind you may need to adjust your length by adding/removing rounds.
Yarn required:
Any DK (3) weight yarn that you can meet gauge with. Samples are knit using Sewrella Yarns Classic DK (100% superwash merino wool, 231 yds / 211 m per 100g).
You will need 1 colour for the sleeves/hem/collar and some of the patchwork squares (colour 1), plus 2 additional colours for the remaining patches (Colours 2 and 3). The gingham patchwork grid (number of squares wide x tall, looking at the front only) varies slightly between sizes to account for the differing bust-to-length proportions. See photos for grid layouts.
4 x 4 grid - Size 1
5 x 4 grid - Sizes 2-6
6 x 4 grid - Sizes 7-9
Yardage/Meters required:
All values are indicated as yards/meters. Colour 1 is your main colour for the sleeves/hem/collar and some of the squares. Colours 2 and 3 are used for the remaining squares. See grids on the previous page for the layout of each colour.
Colour 1 (including sleeves/hem/collar)
565(640, 700, 745)(845, 915, 1025)(1095, 1175) yds / 517(585, 640, 681)(773, 837, 937)(1001, 1074) meters
Colour 2
104(88, 104, 120)(152, 176, 228)(264, 276) yds / 95(80, 95, 110)(139, 161, 208)(241, 252) meters
Colour 3
104(132, 156, 180)(228, 264, 228)(264, 276) yds / 95(121, 143, 165)(208, 241, 208)(241, 252) meters
Yardage/meters per square
13(11, 11, 15)(19, 22, 19)(22, 23) yds / 12(10, 12, 14)(17, 20, 17)(20, 21) meters
Total # squares
32(40, 40, 40)(40, 40, 48)(48, 48)
Note: Yardage is an approximation and is calculated using the recommended measurements and including a 5% buffer. Allow for extra yardage if choosing to do any length modification. Yardage can vary depending on your gauge and knitting, so I always recommend ensuring you have a little bit extra.
