SIZES
One size fits most
Fingering (Sport/DK)

MATERIALS
Approximately 50-80g of fingering weight yarn or 80-100g of Sport or light DK.
I like to make these with wool-alpaca or -silk blends for better drape.

GAUGE
Varies. However, find a gauge that allows for some drape. These mitts are meant to scrunch up around the wrist and a tight gauge will make them less likely to scrunch. More scrunch is what we want.

NEEDLES & NOTIONS
Fingering weight: US 4 (3.5mm) circular needle 32”/80cm
Sport/DK weight: US 6 (4.0mm) circular needle 32”/80cm

PATTERN NOTES
Years ago, before I started knitting in earnest, I bought a pair of fingerless mitts at one of those fancy grocery stores. I wore them until they were threadbare and washing them no longer seemed to make them any less nasty. They lasted years and they went with everything. By the time I felt I needed to replace them, I was good enough at knitting that I wanted to take a stab at making the pattern myself. Since I’ve written it down, I’ve made these mitts dozens of times for gifts, charity, and consignment.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve made these with left-over partial skeins. I weigh out whatever yarn I have left and break it into two even balls. When I’ve used about 2/3 of one ball, I start in on the thumb gusset and then make the second mitt to match.

These mitts are the first hand-knit item I reach for when the weather turns cool enough to justify long pants, so they’ve become my own little harbinger of autumn. I hope you enjoy this simple knit as much as I do!
