If it’s -10 outside and you would much rather be on the beach than shoveling snow – these are the mittens for you! Escape the cold, at least in your head, while you join Gned on the beach enjoying a beautiful sunset.

Degree of Difficulty
This pattern is perfect for the knitter who is familiar with mitten construction and has experience with stranded knitting and reading charts. There are some long floats so experience in catching those will also be helpful.

Materials:
• Needles - US 2 – 2.75mm circulars for Magic Loop or a set of DPN’s (or size needed to get gauge) PS – I never use DPN’s so I won’t be any help at telling you which stitches go on which needles!
• Yarn – 50g of MC and CC in Fingering Weight yarn. This design has plenty of options for colour. I have not given exact amounts here.
• Stitch markers (mark the thumb gusset for easy placement of increases!)
• Scrap yarn or stitch holder for live thumb stitches (I use a safety pin!)
• Darning needle
• Optional: small amount of yarn to overstitch the umbrella

Guage:
• 9 stitches by 10 rows = 2.5cm in stranded colorwork

Size:
• Ladies Medium (20cm (7.75”) from top of cuff to tip of finger, 20.5cm (8”) circumference at the fingers. This is blocked measurements)

Techniques used:

  • knit
  • Ssk
  • K2tog
  • ML
  • MR
  • M (Knit front and back)

The water and sunset effect was created using Schoppel-Wolle Zauberball in their Frische Fische colourway. This mitten design is the perfect canvas to try out different colour placement ideas and colour options. You are only working with two colours at a time in any given row.
