These rotund pulmonate gastropods are members of the Mollusc phylum. Gordon is a snail and Max is a leopard slug.

For Gordon the body and shell are knit separately, both in the round, with short rows to shape the shell and a little bit of fair isle patterning. You can have as much fun as you want with the colours and pattern on the shell, bright colours warn off predators while natural colours will help them be camouflaged.

Limax maximus the leopard slug is based on the body plan of Gordon the Garden Snail, with the striped pattern knitted in with stranded knitting. The patterning looks best if it is irregular, but I have charted out the patterning I used – there is no need to stick to it! You can add extra rows at the straight middle section to make him longer.
