Gossamer Square is available for free on the ItWasYarn blog!

This square is the November Main Square for BAMCAL 2026 (Block-A-Month Crochet Along).

Gossamer Square is a colorful, lightweight square with a delicate, slightly lacy texture. Worked in rounds from the center outward, it’s a lovely addition to blankets, afghans, and other crochet projects.

Choose your square size

The sample shown in the photos was made with sport-weight yarn and a 3.5 mm (US E-4) crochet hook. It measures approximately 8 inches (20 cm).

Want a standard 12-inch (30 cm) square for your afghan? Use Aran-weight yarn and a 5 mm (US H-8) crochet hook instead. The larger version is designed to pair well with other 12-inch squares.

The finished square has 39 stitches per side, with ch-2 spaces at the corners.

Pattern details

  • Worked in rounds, from the center outward
  • Slightly lacy texture
  • Written instructions in US crochet terms
  • Step-by-step instructions with photos for every round
  • Suitable for blankets, afghans, and other projects that use square motifs

Materials

For the sample shown:

  • Sport/Baby-weight yarn: YarnArt Jeans Plus (50 g / 175 yd)
  • 3.5 mm (US E-4) crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure

Approximate yarn amounts for the sample:

  • Rust: 3 g
  • Peach: 7 g
  • White: 4 g
  • Blue: 5 g
  • Emerald: 3 g Total: 22 g

Gauge

For the sport-weight version:
20 sc × 18 rows = 4 × 4 inches (10 × 10 cm).

Gauge is not critical for this project, but it will affect the finished size.

Finished size

  • Sport-weight yarn + 3.5 mm (US E-4) hook: approximately 8 inches (20 cm)
  • Aran/worsted-weight yarn + 5 mm (US H-8) hook: approximately 12 inches (30 cm)

Use the yarn and hook combination that best suits your project. If you’re making an afghan alongside other 12-inch squares, the Aran/worsted version is the one to choose.
