I tend to crochet loosely. If you know you are a tight crocheter, I would recommend using a larger hook. This is a pattern you definitely want the drape. Since the pattern is comprised mostly of loops, I added the in between HDC, DC rows to add a little stability and to help was a little additional weight so that the loops are actually visible. The first couple of rows will curl or ripple, but that is normal until you get a few more rows done. Being mostly loops and simple stitches, this pattern tends to be repetitive, but counting at the end of each row is very important. It’s easier to count than have to frog back a couple of rows like I did! Lol. I would highly recommend putting a stitch marker at the beginning and end of each row as we are decreasing, so that you can keep track of what the first stitch actually is.
Gauge is not crucial in a shawl, but here is my gauge…
11 DC x 5 rows=4”
