The Grace & Frankie Shawl is an elongated triangular shawl that is worked from the top down. The resulting shawl is very easy to wear and will keep you warm without feeling heavy.

The design of the shawl is inspired by the relationship I have with my best friend, Kris. She often compares us to Grace & Frankie (from the Netflix original series)- best friends who love and need each other but on the surface have nothing in common. You’ll see that play out in the shawl where the openness of the lace is offset by the solid fabric of the garter stitch—completely different types of stitches and fabric that complement each other well.

Yarn

  • 2 skeins of Suburban Stitcher Merino DK: 100% Superwash Fine Merino Wool. 115 grams / 250 yards (229 meters) per skein
  • Sample knit in the Predictability Colorway and used 220 grams | 478 yards (473.5 meters)

Needles

  • US 9 (5.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge; circular needles with 32 in (80 cm) cord length suggested

Gauge

  • 14 stitches & 18 rows / 4 in (10 cm) in garter stitch (after blocking)

Notions

  • Tapestry needle, scissors, 6 stitch markers & 2 locking stitch markers (optional), blocking pins, blocking wires (if available).

Finished Size

  • 74 in (188 cm) across the top. 22 in (56 cm) deep at center
  • Note: because of the way the pattern is written, it is easy to adjust the size to make this shawl smaller or larger. I give suggestions for how to ensure you’ll have enough yarn left for the i-cord bind off.

About the Name

This shawl is inspired by my relationship with my best friend, Kris. We’ve been friends since middle school where we met in dance class. In most ways we’re completely different, but those differences somehow bring us closer. It just works. Kris and I both love the Netflix series Grace and Frankie. She once texted me to thank me for being the Grace to her Frankie, for bringing calm and sanity to what can be her whirlwind of a life. The beauty is that we both bring aspects of each of those characters to our relationship. There are funny episodes along the way, but we always figure things out together and help one another find balance.
