I don’t usually design baby blanket patterns, but when I was approached by a yarn company (KnitPal) that makes baby yarn, I couldn’t resist. I’ve actually made many baby blankets: one for each of my six children before they were born, as well as for friends and family. They are each still cherished and very well loved.

Whenever I make a baby blanket, I try to think of what the child would like as they grow older. I want the child to be able to continue enjoying it for as long as the blanket will last, not just as a baby. So I like my blankets to have interesting textures and “unexpected” colors.

My color choice for this blanket centered around the name I gave it, “Gracie Bee”. My oldest daughter bears this beautiful name, although her middle name is Beatrice, often shortened to “Bea”. Even though she is now 18, we still call her “Gracie Bea”!

The trendy honeycomb stitch, sometimes called beehive stitch, is just one of the addictive textures that make this blanket so much fun to knit. And to add to the interest, it is worked on the diagonal. The I-cord edging gives the blanket a nice finished look and is easy to do. Video tutorials are included in the pattern to help you if you are not familiar with this type of edging.

This blanket is so soft and has a wonderful weight because of the cotton yarn that is used. You can make it with whatever yarn you wish, but I highly recommend KnitPal’s “Cotton to the Core” cotton/acrylic blend. I also recommend using size US4 needles to achieve the 36” square size. If you choose larger needles, the pattern will still work, but you’ll have a slightly larger blanket. I used circular needles because the weight of the blanket would make knitting with straight needles rather cumbersome. The double pointed needles are a larger size for the I-cord to accommodate the diagonal construction and allow for ease. Don’t forget to also make the matching cute “Bee-atrice” Bee Stuffy (seen in one of the photos) for your little one to cuddle!
