Although tension is not essential for this pattern, the sample shown was worked using the following tension: 13 stitches and 9 rows measured over 10cm, 4 in, of granny stripe using a 5mm (H/8) hook or size needed to obtain correct tension (gauge).

Each granny motif measures approximately 15 cm, 6 in, before it
is joined.
