The Granny Square Shopper is a fun and nostalgic crochet project that brings the timeless charm of granny squares into a modern, functional design. Whether you’re heading to the market, going shopping, or enjoying a day out, this colorful tote is the perfect companion.

This bag is worked using Scheepjes Softfun, a soft and durable cotton-acrylic blend available in a wide range of beautiful colors. I used two Softfun Colour Packs (20g balls) for extra colour variety, plus five 50g balls in color Tortilla for joining and the borders. You can also use leftover yarn from your stash, but keep in mind that your final measurements may vary depending on yarn weight and tension.

The bag is constructed from 16 granny squares, joined together using the Join As You Go method. Once joined, the body is shaped by adding extra rows for height, a solid bottom, and two side panels. The result is a practical and eye-catching bag that is fun to make and even more fun to use.

Size Options

The pattern is written for one size, designed to fit around a reusable jute shopping bag (mine is from Dutch supermarket Albert Heijn). You can adjust the dimensions by changing yarn weight, hook size, or the number of rows in your panels.
